Care Home Gets Thumbs up From Residents at Second Year Celebrations
Staff and residents at an Ashbourne care home which used to be a hotel have just celebrated its second birthday.
Ashbourne Lodge opened on September 1, 2014 following a major refurbishment of the building which used to be the Miraj Hotel and Leisure Club.
The residents were treated to a special celebration, including a buffet, cake and entertainment. Relatives were also invited along to the party.
Former nurse Joan Stanton, 95, has been at the home almost two years. She said: “I think it’s great here, the food is very good and they make a terrible fuss of you.”
Judith Oliver attended the celebration with her mum Barbara Dexter. She said: “Everyone is very welcoming, it doesn’t matter what time of day you come the staff are very friendly and approachable. Nothing is too much trouble and they offer a variety of activities.”
Jim Watt, 50, has been the home manager since it opened and had formerly worked at Milford House, one of Milford Care’s other homes. He said: “We’re very passionate about the people that we look after. Though we come here every day, the residents don’t live in our workplace, we are working in their home.”
Maintenance man at the home Jon Eaton - who was the manager when it was the Miraj Hotel until it closed in 2013 - helped transform it from a hotel to a care home.
Jon, 31, said: “The job change has been massive. I went from being behind the scenes doing office work to manual labour, and ripping bathrooms out.
“Helping the residents here is much more rewarding that dealing with hotel customers”
Milford Care has homes in Belper, Milford, Hucknall, Alfreton, and Arnold.
