New Sainsbury's superstore opens in Sutton as part of £50m mixed-use development
A new Harris Partnership-designed Sainsbury’s superstore has opened in the London Borough of Sutton as part of the multi-million pound regeneration project.
The 12,221 sq m property boasts a two-storey glass atrium main entrance fronting on to a new public square in the south eastern corner of the redevelopment on Crown Road.
Comprising part of the £50m Old Gas Works retail and residential redevelopment, the new Sainsbury’s store will act as an anchor tenant for the new retail units and comes after Harris gained planning approval for the six-acre site back in 2014.
Since then the architects and urban planners have worked with real estate investment firm LXB Retail Properties to clear the site of old buildings and disused gas towers which had long been considered a local eyesore.
As part of the project, road improvement works have been carried out on Crown Road and Sutton High Street, including traffic flow works and the construction of a new 350 space car park attached to the new Sainsbury’s.
Planning permission for phase 2 of the development has also been secured and will see the creation of new commercial and residential units, including 181 one, two and three bedroom apartments along with five townhouses.
