Staycation Surge For Nott's Holidaymakers

A coach travel company in Nottingham has seen a marked increase in people booking Christmas getaways to UK seaside resorts as a result of Brexit and people becoming disheartened with airlines.

Skills Group, which has pick up points across the East Midlands, has seen a 14 per cent increase in people booking Christmas coastal tours to destinations such as Eastbourne and Llandudno. It has also seen a 20 per cent increase in bookings for its new year coastal tours.

The figures are in line with national trends revealed earlier this year by Visit England, which claimed that ‘during 2016’s first quarter, 7.3 million holidaymakers stayed in the UK.’

Nigel Skill, chairman at the firm, said: “We think that people are seeking solace at the UK seaside because of factors including the disasters with airlines, as well as the political uncertainty of the EU Referendum.

“Seaside resorts are quite familiar and can be a comfortable place to visit. There is an element of nostalgia. Travelling by coach takes away the stresses of travelling as there is no busy airport, no flights being cancelled and is it easy to get back home if required.”

With just weeks left until Christmas, the company has revealed its most popular Christmas tours are Pitlochly in the Scottish Highlands, and Eastbourne in East Sussex.

Due to customer demand Skills has increased the number of trips it offers and has already sold out for trips to Torquay in January and February. Other popular destinations include Beamish in Durham, Bembridge Coast, the Isle of Wight, Cornwall, Llandudno and North Devon.

Many people are now opting for holidays closer to home. Mark Averill, a photographer from Derby, said: “We did a staycation this year and it was brilliant. We packed the car and headed down the south coast. The kids loved exploring.”
