Care Home Invites People for Lunch to Combat Loneliness This Christmas

A Belper care home is inviting people over 65 to join its residents for a meal over the Christmas period in a bid to combat loneliness.

Spencer Grove, in Springwood Gardens, will run its turkey and tinsel initiative throughout December including on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Anybody over the age of 65 that lives in the area is invited to join them for breakfast, lunch or dinner for a small donation.

Phillipa Child-Ford, administration manager at the Milford Care owned home, said: “Anyone is welcome to come along and join us in the dining area for breakfast, dinner or tea. They will also be able to get involved with activities. We’re really aiming this initiative at people who live alone and who might not have and friends or family to keep them company over the festive period. We offer day care throughout the year, but wanted to do something specifically designed for those in our community who may feel isolated or lonely at this time of year.”

Age UK have estimated that 982,200 people aged 60 or over feel lonelier through the festive season than at any other time of the year. Almost one million elderly people are expected to spend Christmas alone.

According to the Campaign to End Loneliness more than 51 per cent of all people aged 75 and over live alone, with 17 per cent of older people are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week.
