Sheffield project shortlisted for top engineering award
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has announced that a project in Sheffield has been shortlisted for recognition at its annual Yorkshire and Humber regional awards.
The project, which is one of eighteen from across the region to be shortlisted, is the Sheffield Lower Don Valley Flood Defence Scheme.
The awards are held annually to showcase the outstanding work done during the past two years by civil engineers based in Yorkshire and the Humber region. They are divided into three categories; projects with a total cost in excess of £5 million compete for the Centenary Award, those between £500,000 and £5 million can apply for the Smeaton Award, and those costing under £500,000 are eligible for the Sir John Fowler Award.
The Sheffield Lower Don Valley Flood Defence Scheme has been nominated for the Centenary Award.
In 2017 the Centenary Award was won by the A160 Port of Immingham Improvements project, the Smeaton Award was won by the Butterley Spillway Improvement Works near Marsden and the Sir John Fowler Award went to the works on the Brow Wood Underbridge, between Egton and Grosmont, near Whitby.
Professor Lord Robert Mair, the ICE’s president, will be presenting the awards at the ICE’s annual black tie gala dinner, at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate on 2 March, rounding off his two day visit to the region as part of the ICE’s special 200th anniversary year.
Penny Marshall, the ICE’s regional director for Yorkshire and Humber, said: “The standard of entries we see every year is exceptionally high, and this year is no different. As well as engineering excellence, the shortlisted projects also have to demonstrate to the judging panel that they have benefitted the communities where they are situated, so the judges have a difficult task ahead of them
“There are thousands of civil engineers in Yorkshire and the Humber that work tirelessly to design, improve and maintain the infrastructure that we all rely on, and these awards are a great opportunity to highlight the positive impact their work has on our lives.”
