Plans in for Liverpool retail scheme made of refurbished shipping containers
Developer CanCo has submitted plans for a retail scheme in Liverpool composed of shipping containers.
The company is looking to replicate the success of similar developments in London’s Shoreditch and Brixton areas with a 14-unit shopping and leisure scheme on Lodge Lane, Toxteth.
CanCo is promising to prioritise space at the development for local retailers and entrepreneurs.
Subject to planning approval, the scheme will turn former shipping containers into refurbished, insulated units of 150 sq ft with glazed frontages.
The containers will be painted different colours, with some stacked two high, and laid out around a landscaped central courtyard.
The site chosen is bounded by Lodge Lane and Grierson Street.
CanCo’s Nathan Schreiber said: “Lodge Lane succeeds because it meets the needs of its local community and, in doing so, has become a draw for the wider city.
“It’s a big success and try finding an empty shop unit. You won’t. Our aim is to provide more room for local entrepreneurs to grow their businesses in a low cost, high quality setting.”
If approved, CanCo is hoping to have started on site by the autumn.
Speaking further, Nathan said: ““Liverpool Council have been very helpful. Lodge Lane is a great neighbourhood and we want to add to its appeal whilst giving local residents the opportunity to set up or expand their businesses.
“We want to provide an environment where retailers can test new concepts and products. These are difficult times for the high street but with the right focus on place-making and meeting local needs we know places like Lodge Lane can continue to thrive.”
