Survey Suggests Northumbrian Castle Has Key to Meaningful Marriages

A Northumbrian castle may be providing brides and grooms with that intangible something that is not quite an insurance policy or guarantee, but probably the next best thing.

Langley Castle, which has stood on the Northumbrian landscape, in its charming location of Langley-on-Tyne, for 669 years, has discovered that the secret to a long-lasting marriage may actually be found simply by marrying within its four rather sturdy, seven-foot-thick walls.

A research survey – not carried out simply amongst the doe-eyed and loved-up, but amongst 1000 consumers selected at random by independent research company, Gorkana - found that one-in-twelve women and one-in-fourteen men believe Langley has the X-factor for happy couples. These confident consumers all agreed that “a wedding held there would be more meaningful and precious than those at many other of today’s venues.”

One in fifteen men and women alike even went so far as to say, “I think a marriage made there might stand the test of time, because it would be so special.”

And it would seem that the romance starts the moment a couple sets foot inside the medieval walls of a castle that has itself stood the test of time, despite being located in the heart of Border Country, where wars between England and Scotland, and raids by Border Reivers, went on for centuries.

15% of both men and women unequivocally say they would “definitely say ‘yes’, if someone popped the question there”, perhaps underlining why Langley Castle has been a “Best for Romance” award winner.

Langley’s executive manager, Margaret Livingstone-Evans, says: “Everyone concerned with a wedding has a deep wish that it will lead to a happy and long marriage. With the costs involved, that is even more important for many. Whilst insurers will not pay out if that is not the case, we hope we offer a little bit of reassurance, given what survey interviewees have said about believing a wedding at Langley would create a marriage that lasts. Anyone paying the bill should really note this, as nobody wants all that money to go to waste, or see the romantic idyll shattered, just a few years down the matrimonial road.”
