‘Barbenheimer’ day has cinemas prepping for their "busiest weekend of the year"
Cinema bosses are predicting the busiest weekend of the year so far, with both Barbie and Oppenheimer hitting the big screen today.
Anticipation has been building for undoubtedly two of the biggest blockbusters of 2023, as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller Oppenheimer look set to steal the headlines this weekend.
Early ticket sales from Showcase Cinemas suggest the films will combine to generate the busiest cinema weekend so far this year, as film fans flock to their nearest big screen to ensure they don’t miss out on the action.
Showcase Cinemas is forecasting advance ticket sales for Barbie alone to be at the highest levels for any film since last year’s Avatar: The Way Of Water - which went on to become the third highest grossing film of all time - with Oppenheimer not far behind.
Jon Dixon, UK marketing director at Showcase Cinemas, said: “We’re looking forward to a bumper weekend here at Showcase and it goes without saying both Barbie and Oppenheimer are set to be huge hits at the box office. With both films being released today known as ‘Barbenheimer’ day, we’re expecting this to be the busiest weekend of the year so far by some distance at our cinemas.
“Last year’s top performing films were Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water, and ticket sales for Barbie are edging ever closer to these box office hits.”
What’s more, Showcase have seen their ‘Barbenheimer’ video go viral on social media, achieving over 4 million views since it was posted earlier this week.
