Operator named to power airport take-off plans
An aviation heavyweight has been appointed to propel airport revival plans.
Munich Airport International is supporting a blueprint to resurrect Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Bosses say it will strengthen efforts to re-open the site in spring 2026 and make it “an engine for growth”.
The operator, which manages a terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport, will provide management services.
It will work alongside UK-based FP Airports, which has also been drafted in to oversee Doncaster Sheffield’s return following its 2022 closure.
The companies were appointed by airport operator FlyDoncaster, the wholly-owned City of Doncaster Council company.
Hailing their arrival, Doncaster mayor Ros Jones said the work to restore Doncaster Sheffield had reached a “significant milestone”.
She said: “Munich Airport International has the pedigree in the field of aviation, shares our ambition for a successful airport and brings a wealth of experience, capacity and influence to deliver a thriving airport.
“The team at FP Airports has worked with us creatively to put together the right solution, and we are confident the re-opening and future operation of Doncaster’s airport is in good hands.”
Lorenzo Di Loreto, managing director at Munich Airport International, which also provides management support to airports in Bulgaria, Honduras and El Salvador, said: “We are proud to support and contribute to Doncaster Sheffield’s re-opening.
“Our mission is to participate in the development of the airport into a top modern and competitive UK airport.”
Raoul Witherall, chief executive at FP Airports, added: “We are proud to support the re-opening of this historic airport site.”
