SQ Digital marks 25 years with new CEO
Lancaster-based digital marketing consultancy SQ Digital is entering a new era as it celebrates 25 years in business and appoints a new chief executive.
Kamal Essa, previously director, steps up to lead the company with a refreshed management team.
Founded in 2000 by brothers Vilayte and Husen Essa as SearchQuest, the company was an early UK pioneer in SEO before rebranding to SQ Digital in 2016 to reflect its expanded digital marketing services.
Kamal, who joined in 2016 from senior roles at major organisations including the Co-operative Group, took full ownership in October 2024, setting the stage for growth.
He said: “Vilayte and Husen showed true entrepreneurial flair in founding SearchQuest and building something special over 25 years.
“During this period, SQ Digital has helped grow countless businesses while providing a career opportunity to hundreds of people.
“Many of those relationships still thrive today, a testament to our values.
“Vilayte and Husen both wanted the opportunity to pursue new interests, and they’ve passed the baton.
“I’m proud to lead the business into a new era and excited with what we have planned.”
With a team of 20, SQ Digital serves clients across sectors including manufacturing, retail, hospitality and professional services, working with businesses such as Kangaroo Self Storage and St John’s Hospice.
Supporting Kamal in his leadership are James Brady, digital operations manager; Kate Martin, key account manager; and Paul Zanelli, digital marketing manager.
Kamal added: “We are proud to celebrate 25 years, but this marks a new beginning for SQ, one that is built on strong foundations.
“Our aspiration is to grow to £3 million but we are aiming for considered growth, based on the right, long-term client relationships led by a talented and affable team.”
