Wallace & Gromit headline museum’s comeback

A museum is marking its return with a family-friendly animation exhibition.

The Harris, in Preston, will reopen on September 28 with Wallace & Gromit in A Case at the Museum, celebrating Aardman’s iconic characters. 

The immersive show will feature original sketches, sets, and props from Aardman’s most loved productions, including Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and The Wrong Trousers. 

Visitors can explore interactive displays that reveal the meticulous stop-motion techniques behind the characters, offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of Aardman animation.

Nick Park CBE, creator of Wallace & Gromit, who was born in Preston, said: “Growing up, I was always interested in Preston’s history and heritage, and The Harris played a big part in that. 

“I found the museum fascinating as a child – I loved exploring the artefacts – and the library was such a great resource. 

“As a young inquisitive filmmaker, I spent time there, reading all about filmmaking and animation. 

“The Harris has definitely left a lasting impression on me.”

It will be the first major exhibition following the Harris Your Place redevelopment, which has transformed the venue.

The exhibition celebrates almost 50 years of animation and reflects the museum’s renewed focus on creativity and accessibility for all ages.

Councillor Anna Hindle, cabinet member for culture and arts at Preston City Council, added: “We couldn’t think of a better way to welcome our visitors back to The Harris than with Aardman’s magical characters. 

“This exhibition celebrates the artistry of animation and will be an unforgettable experience for families and fans.”
