Training scheme drives jobs in wind sector

A North East training initiative is set to boost skills and jobs in the renewable sector.

New College Durham and The Wind Academy have partnered through NEPO’s External Training framework to deliver specialist offshore wind turbine courses tailored for the public sector.

The programme, launched in February 2024 and supported by a £1.6 million Skills Bootcamp fund, is designed to provide clear pathways into high-value roles in the growing offshore wind industry.

Training takes place at The Wind Academy’s Blyth facilities, which include a full-sized, modified wind turbine for hands-on experience.

Since its launch, more than 850 students have completed the courses, with around 85 per cent moving into employment or securing contracts in the sector.

Key employers such as SPIE Wind Connect, Ventus Energy, Endiprev and Briggs Marine have recruited directly from the programme.

Officials say the partnership, now extended until 2029, demonstrates NEPO’s role in connecting suppliers and public sector organisations to accelerate skills development and support the North East’s ambition to become a leading UK offshore wind hub.

Geoff Briggs, managing director at The Wind Academy, said: “Our goal is to make wind turbine training accessible and practical for every public sector organisation looking to upskill their workforce.

“We’re committed to delivering industry-standard courses that prepare technicians for the challenges of offshore wind projects.”

Colleen Peters, vice principal business development, apprenticeships and productivity at New College Durham, added: “This partnership has been instrumental in enabling us to respond swiftly to sector demands, especially in offshore wind.

“It’s helped us extend our reach and provide learners with real pathways into sustainable, high-value roles.”

Carl Telford, professional services lead at NEPO, added: “The aim of our External Training solution is to support the UK public sector in skills development across a broad range of disciplines.

“NEPO is very proud that this project has been able to fuel the North East's offshore wind workforce with 75 per cent employment progression rate, setting a powerful example of how targeted training can meet industry needs and transform young people’s lives.”
