Redcar's Boating Lake, which has been reopened to the public

Boating lake set for nostalgic return

A North East town is set to celebrate the reopening of its historic boating lake.

Redcar’s beloved Boating Lake, first opened in 1937, has undergone extensive restoration after investigations revealed significant cracking across the concrete basin, which required careful hand repairs.

Following rigorous testing, the lake successfully retained water and reopened to the public on September 10.

The grand re-opening event takes place on Saturday, October 11, from 11am-3pm, offering free family-friendly entertainment that nods to the lake’s original heyday.

Visitors can enjoy vintage fairground rides, the town’s original Sunshine Stage at the bandstand, live music, crafts and model boat displays.

Highlights include performances from 15-year-old Redcar TikTok star George Robinson, singing classics from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bing Crosby, alongside the Lipsticks Vintage Trio.

Lady Lemon Top will entertain children with stories celebrating Redcar’s history, while Creative Village CIC runs craft sessions to make model boats from recycled materials.

Traditional Punch & Judy shows and interactive art and poetry activities with Greener Lavelle and Tees Women Poets add to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Kirkleatham Museum will also reprint original vintage postcards, inviting visitors to write down their hopes and dreams for Redcar, while Redcar Model Boat Club will showcase its collection of model boats, bringing the water back to life in every sense.

Councillor Alec Brown, leader of  Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “As a way of thanking everyone for their patience and support while the repairs were taking place to the Boating Lake, we thought it would be fitting to hold a grand re-opening event for everyone to enjoy.

“We are proud to have brought the Boating Lake back to life for future generations to enjoy and I would encourage the public to come along and see the Boating Lake for themselves whilst also taking the opportunity to enjoy some of the fantastic entertainment on offer.

“Join us for a day of fun, memories and celebration as Redcar Boating Lake begins a new chapter in its long history.”

The event marks a vibrant return for a cherished community landmark, blending history, creativity and entertainment to celebrate Redcar’s heritage.
