MR Cricket Hockey nets nationwide growth
A Cambridgeshire-based sports retailer is growing its reach nationwide with expert support.
MR Cricket Hockey, founded in 2012 by lifelong cricket enthusiasts Merrick Fuller and Paul Redfarn, has transformed from a single cricket shop in Burwell into a thriving national business.
Initially focused on cricket, the specialist retailer expanded into hockey to meet demand from local independent schools, creating a year-round offering and diversifying its market.
Today, MR Cricket Hockey supplies more than 130 sports clubs and numerous schools across the UK with equipment, branded teamwear, and customised sports apparel.
Merrick said: “We were both keen cricketers and wanted to create a store offering not just products, but genuine expertise and service for players at every level.”
The company’s reputation is built on expertise and personal connection, with a team of eight staff delivering knowledgeable advice alongside a carefully curated selection of products from leading global brands.
This dedication has helped MR Cricket Hockey stand out as a trusted supplier for both cricket and hockey enthusiasts.
Merrick added: “Customer service has always been our key differentiator.
“We focus on helping people find the right products and solving any problems quickly.
“That’s what keeps customers coming back.
“Whether someone visits us in person or shops online, we strive to offer the best possible service and products for our customers, enabling them to make the right choices when it comes to their sports gear.”
Recognising the importance of reaching a wider audience, Merrick and Paul invested early in building a strong online presence.
Today, their sales are almost evenly split between in-store and online channels.
To support this growth, the business partnered with APC Cambridge and The APC Network in 2024, ensuring reliable and high-quality delivery that matches the company’s customer service standards.
Merrick added: “The service from APC Cambridge has been brilliant.
“The team is fantastic, and we always get fast answers and help when we need it.
“It makes a real difference having personable, local support from people who know our business and genuinely care about getting things right.
“We can pick up the phone, talk through any questions and know that the team will go the extra mile to support us.
“That level of trust and responsiveness is invaluable for us and, ultimately, for our customers.”
Geoff Morland, owner of APC Cambridge, added: “We’re proud to support SMEs like MR Cricket Hockey.
“Businesses like theirs are the backbone of our communities, and it’s incredibly rewarding to help them grow.
“By combining our local expertise with the national reach of The APC network, we’re committed to helping them connect with even more customers both locally and nationwide.”
With online sales continuing to grow, MR Cricket Hockey now aims for digital channels to account for 60-65 per cent of its turnover, extending its reach to sports enthusiasts across the UK while maintaining the personal touch that has driven its success.
Geoff added: “As MR Cricket Hockey continues to grow their online presence, we’ll be there to support them every step of the way.
“Their commitment to quality and customer care truly sets them apart, and it’s a privilege to be part of their journey.
“We’re excited about what the future holds and look forward to helping them achieve their goals for many years to come.”
