Blackfriars brews up return of beer festival

A Newcastle beer festival celebrating heritage, local brewing and community spirit is set to return this spring.

Blackfriars Restaurant, alongside its onsite St Dominic’s Brewery, will host the three-day event from 22–24 May, marking its second year and an expanded programme.

The festival will feature eight regional breweries, including Flash House and Wear Beer, alongside a wider range of beers from St Dominic’s, such as a porter, blonde and triple.

Visitors will also be able to take part in tasting sessions and meet brewers throughout the weekend.

Set within the Cloister Garden of the city’s 13th-century former Dominican friary, the event will combine craft beer with street food, live music and a programme celebrating the region’s brewing culture.

Inspired by historic ‘Church Ales’, where communities gathered to support local causes, the festival will continue that tradition, with £1 from every ticket donated to the Newcastle United Foundation.

Blackfriars’ connection to brewing dates back centuries, when Dominican friars produced ales on site and the venue later became a meeting place for the city’s Brewers’ Guild.

Now in its second year, the festival aims to bring together local brewers, residents and visitors, celebrating both the city’s heritage and its modern craft beer scene.

Rebecca Armstrong, general manager at Blackfriars and event organiser, said: “We’re delighted to bring the Beer Festival back for a second year - and with an even bigger line-up.

“It’s a chance to toast Newcastle’s brewing heritage while supporting a charity that makes a real impact in our communities.

“Whether you’re a seasoned beer enthusiast or simply looking for a brilliant day out, there’ll be something for everyone.”

Tickets cost £9.50 per person, including a commemorative St Dominic’s-branded schooner, festival brochure and first beer.
