Historic Kendal landmark lands £4.6 million boost

A historic Kendal landmark is set for a new lease of life after securing more than £4.6 million in National Lottery funding.

Stricklandgate House Trust has been awarded £4,656,036 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund towards a £5.6 million project to conserve and enhance the Grade II-listed Stricklandgate House.

The Georgian building, which is around 250 years old, retains many original features and has played a significant role in the town’s history.

Since 1993, it has operated as a centre for the charitable sector and is currently home to 18 local organisations, while being used by more than 50 others and supporting over 13,000 people annually.

However, its age, heavy use and alterations made over the years mean significant repair and renewal work is now required.

The Stricklandgate House 4 Sustainable Heritage project will restore the building while improving accessibility and environmental sustainability.

Plans also include a new Community Hub and Community Lounge, alongside improvements to existing offices and meeting spaces.

Funding will also support a programme of heritage and community activities, with volunteers and local groups helping explore and share the building's history.

John Leigh and Margaret Belk, joint chairs of the board of trustees, said: “To say we are absolutely delighted to receive this funding is an understatement! 

“We can now progress plans, three years in the making to sustain the heritage of Stricklandgate House so that it can continue supporting our local charities and communities for years to come.

“Plans for a community space and Community Lounge in the heart of Kendal will now become a reality and provide friendly, welcome and inclusive space for everyone from the individual to local community groups looking for a relaxed space to run activities.”

The project is also backed by Westmorland and Furness Council, Kendal Town Council and several charitable organisations and local donors.
