Building a future for North East grassroots football

For more than 130 years, Gosforth Bohemians Football Club has been part of the fabric of grassroots sport in Newcastle.

Established in 1894, Bohemians is the oldest amateur football club in the North East, but while its history provides firm foundations, its focus today is firmly on the future.

With more than 520 junior and senior players, a complete pathway from Under-5s through to veterans’ football and ambitious plans for a new community 4G hub, the club is looking to build a sporting legacy for generations to come – and is inviting North East businesses to become part of the journey.

Based at the historic Bohemians Sports Ground at Brunton Park in Gosforth, which is also home to Bohemians Tennis Club, its football operation extends to a second site at Kenton School.

That breadth reflects an ethos built around providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

A significant step forward came in 2023 when Bohemians joined forces with Kingston Park Juniors under the Gosforth Bohemians banner, creating a single club structure and establishing a pathway stretching from junior football right through to the adult game.

Today, more than 400 youngsters represent the club, while its senior section is the largest on Tyneside, with more than 120 players competing across five teams.

Despite that growth, Bohemians remains proudly amateur.

Players pay monthly subscriptions for the privilege of pulling on the famous red and white shirt, helping preserve an identity that has endured for more than a century.

That tradition is being matched by growing ambition on the pitch.

The 2023/24 season proved a landmark campaign, with the first team completing a historic double by winning the Northern Football Alliance Division One title and Combination Cup under the stewardship of James Katirai – an achievement unprecedented in the club’s history.

Two solid campaigns in the Alliance Premier Division have since established Bohemians among the region’s strongest amateur sides.

Now under the management of Martyn Clark, the club is continuing to introduce talented younger players alongside its established squad, with ambitions to secure its highest-ever league finish and compete for further silverware.

Yet some of Bohemians’ biggest goals lie beyond matchday.

Central to its long-term vision is a proposed artificial 4G football hub being developed alongside Kenton School and the Football Foundation.

Identified within the Football Foundation’s regional growth plan, the proposed facility would provide year-round playing opportunities for young people, schools, community groups and grassroots teams, while helping address the shortage of quality football facilities across Newcastle.

For Bohemians, it could also unlock the next stage of the club’s footballing journey.

Improved facilities would help it meet ground-grading requirements for progression to the Northern League, providing a route for talented players to continue developing within the club rather than having to look elsewhere for opportunities.

Turning that ambition into reality will require support, and Bohemians is keen to strengthen its relationships with the North East business community.

The club has already attracted backing from organisations including Mincoffs Solicitors, Koziwarm, Trusted Business Partner and Pink Lane Bakery, demonstrating the potential for businesses and grassroots sport to build mutually beneficial partnerships.

Benton-based Project Padel became front-of-shirt sponsor last season and has used the partnership to engage with Bohemians’ growing community.

“It has been great to work with the Bohemians team over the last few months. “We are really excited about the partnership going forward. “It is a community club and one of the most respected amateur football institutions in the North East.” Matt Flinders, commercial director of Mincoffs

That audience extends well beyond the touchline.

The club’s Instagram channel alone reaches more than 160,000 people each month, providing sponsors with exposure to players, families, supporters and the wider grassroots football community.

For businesses, the opportunity is therefore about more than putting a logo on a shirt or advertising board.

It is a chance to connect with one of the North East’s largest football communities while investing directly in participation, opportunity and the future of grassroots sport.

That support will become increasingly important as Bohemians continues to grow.

With more than 520 players already involved, demand for quality facilities is only increasing.

The proposed 4G hub offers an opportunity to create a modern sporting asset serving not just the club but schools, grassroots teams and community organisations across the area.

For a club whose story began in 1894, it represents the chance to ensure the next 130 years are every bit as significant as the first.

Kit, player and advertising hoarding sponsorship opportunities are now available as Bohemians seeks partners to help turn that vision into reality.

Supporting Gosforth Bohemians is not simply about sponsoring a football club.

It is an opportunity to invest in a 130-year-old community institution and help create a lasting North East football legacy for the next generation.
