Rookie mistake destroys mansion

The first day of a new job can be a nerve-wracking experience – everyone is bound to make at least one mistake, sometimes even a hugely embarrassing one. However, none of the mistakes I’ve heard of come close to that of an unfortunate apprentice plumber in Devon. The Daily Mail reports that while working in the roof space of a £5 million mansion on the south coast, an unlucky incident involving a blowtorch and some foam insulation resulted in the gutting by fire of the 250-year-old listed building.

The team of plumbers working on the contract have closed ranks, determined to keep their colleague’s name secret, but investigators believe that a 17-year-old novice was working in the area where the fire started. The authorities have also said that the accident was not the apprentice’s fault, but that he was still “very upset”.
