Businesses ready to leave Royal Mail

The recent postal disruption had dented confidence in Royal Mail to such an extent that 55% of small businesses are more likely to use private delivery companies, new research reveals. The poll, by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), found that small firms are now considering alternative postal methods even after the industrial action is resolved.

According to the BCC, 62% of small businesses sent and settled invoices through alternatives to Royal Mail during the strikes. A further 88% recorded a significant impact on their business, including cashflow problems, loss of sales, and less investment through meeting the costs of the strike.

Natalie Evans, BCC head of policy, said: “This result really hammers home the damage that this dispute has done to Royal Mail. Small businesses rely on a decent post service and have been let down badly over the past few weeks. It will not be easy for Royal Mail to regain their confidence. The only way it will win back lost business is through pushing ahead with its modernisation, providing the efficient, value for money and reliable service that firms demand.”

The recent industrial action is estimated to have cost Royal Mail £200m. Further strikes planned for this week have now been postponed following new talks between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers’ Union.
