Responsive wins Athens contract

A North East engineering company has won a contract to supply equipment for a new cultural centre in Greece. The Team Valley-based Responsive Engineering Group has been responsible for the development and manufacture of several prototype acoustic panels for the new €50 million House of Letters and Arts being built in Athens.

When opened later this year it will house a 1,000 seat amphitheatre and stage, as well as a 1,000 sq m floor space for art exhibitions, an electronic library, recording studio, restaurant and other outdoor leisure facilities.

Responsive Engineering won the contract following its work in creating a landmark feature called The Cone as part of the redevelopment of the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

The completed panels are now in Grenoble, France for testing and each panel has been precision engineered and shaped at the Team Valley factory to ensure that the pitch, density and surface finish meets exacting acoustic performance levels.

Peter Bernard, managing director of Responsive Engineering, said: “This is a very prestigious project for us and shows our growing capacity to work on major international architectural projects. It has also enabled us to use the unique expertise and skills gained particularly on the Greenwich project to deliver added value solutions on time and cost efficiently.”
