North East across the world...
Last Friday in the bdaily, we heard about the Birmingham MEPs who had a picture of the wrong Birmingham on their website - Birmingham, Alabama rather than Birmingham, West Midlands. This little mistake got us interested in what North East-inspired towns across the world looked like…
Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia
Durham, North Carolina, USA
Sunderland, Ontario, Canada (no picture, so you’ll have to make do with the Wikipedia article)
Middlesborough (note the spelling), Kentucky, USA
Darlington is all over the place, with nearly a dozen locations in the USA bearing the name, and three in Australia. Gateshead is a suburb of the Australian Newcastle, and Stockton is on the other side of the river. The big one, of course, is Washington. Along with the capital of the United States, it is also a state, 31 counties, at least 36 cities, one lake, two islands, and several mountains. And that’s just in the USA. Not bad for a town of 60,000 people.
