Help put North East picnics on the map
Family bakers Warburtons have launched a poll to find the UK’s favourite picnic spot, and voting is now open for the North East representatives. The Picnic Awards 2008 coincide with Warburtons ‘National Bread Week’, which runs from 5–11 May. All you have to do is log onto the website www.welovebread.co.uk register your vote and be in with a chance of winning a family picnic in Central Park, New York.
After months of searching and hundreds of votes being cast from picnic lovers across the region, Newcastle’s Pets’ Corner, in Jesmond Dene,was named last year’s regional winner of the Warburtons Picnic Awards 2007.
This year, the ten sites in the running to be crowned the region’s ‘Best Picnic Spot’ are:
- The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland
- Once Brewed Picnic Site on the Roman Wall, Northumberland
- St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay
- South Marine Park, South Shields
- The Angel of the North, Gateshead
- Washington Wetlands Centre, County Durham
- Tanfield Steam Railway, County Durham
- Roseberry Topping in Tees Valley
- Mowbray Park in Sunderland
- Pets Corner in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle
During the final heat, the North East winner will go on to battle it out against the other regional winners from across the UK for the title of ‘Warburtons Best Picnic Spot 2008’. The overall winner will receive a £1,000 cash bursary for the site and a plaque to ensure all visitors know it’s the UK’s favourite place to picnic. Each regional winner will also be presented with a £500 bursary towards the maintenance of the site.
The closing date for the regional round is Friday 16 May with the North East regional winner being announced on or about 2 June.
