Green leader drives global sales
A Northumberland biotechnology firm has established itself as a global market leader in green chemistry exports.
Prozomix Ltd, of Haltwhistle, is taking advantage of the increased demand in the scientific world for efficient production in drugs and other chemicals that can be brought to the global marketplace.
The company, which produces a large range of designer Enzymes, estimates that 90% of its sales are generated from overseas.
Spokesperson Dr Simon Charnock, said: “Our export sales break down into three main areas, the USA and Europe 40% each, and 20% for the rest of world.
“As a relatively new company in a rapidly expanding market we are continually exploring opportunities, and there have been some significant changes recently which are especially working to our advantage”.
One of the most noteworthy changes made by chemical industry players is to carry out their work in a greener and more efficient way.
Dr Charnock said: “Traditional methods to make drugs for example involve several processes (or “steps”) to develop a single product. This is very inefficient and costly both in terms of finance and energy use. The products we supply from our library or make especially for clients can greatly reduce the number of steps required, and sometimes just one enzyme is required.”
To ensure efficient access to the overseas markets, the business worked with a number of organisations including Passport, the Overseas Market Introduction Service and UK Trade & Investment.
