Jobs at risk with potential golf course closure
ONE of the region’s council run golf clubs is facing the threat of closure which will cost up to 6 jobs.
Over the past four years Roseberry Grange Golf Course has witnessed a decline in membership and and is now running at a loss.
Durham County Council has to make budget cuts of £125m, and said that unless an alternative can be found, it will close.
Councillor Bob Young, Cabinet Member For Leisure, said: “This is not a decision the council will take lightly but is one of many tough choices we will have to make in the coming months and years.
“We realise the golf club is much-enjoyed by the members and provides employment for six staff, however, financially we simply can’t afford to subsidise it.
“We are very much hoping that, over the next three months, a viable alternative to closure will be found and it goes without saying we will support in any way we are able.
“However we have to use our limited resources to maintain front-line services as a priority.”
