Competition Commission rules against BAA
The Competition Commission has ruled that BAA must sell off Glasgow and Stanstead Airports and Edinburgh or Glasgow.
The BBC reports that the airport operator has challenged this decision, though has already sold off Gatwick.
In the BAA report, the Competition Commission said that the sales process for Stanstead would begin in three months, closely followed by the sale of a Scottish airport.
BAA has already fought against the decision, but the court of Appeal ruled against the airport operator. The Supreme Court has since refused to allow them to appeal again.
Peter Freeman from the Competition Commission said to the BBC: “The original decision to require BAA to divest three airports remains the right one for customers.”
It is now hoped that the public will benefit from a wider range of ownership within the aviation industry, despite the decision to prevent the construction of any new runways as any London airport.
