First round of Naval redundancies announced.
The first round of Naval redundancies will see more than 1,000 personnel lose their jobs later today, in the first round of military cuts.
According to the BBC, one third of the job losses are compulsory, with a further 670 applications for redundancy also being accepted.
This cut is the first stage of the navy’s attempt tp cut numbers by 5,000 by 2015, as part of wider armed forces cuts, set to help save £5 billion.
Earlier this month almost 2000 soldiers and RAF personnel were given notice of redundancy, as part of the recommendations announced in last year’s Strategic Defence and Security Review.
Another round of redundancies is due in March, with a further 25,000 civilian staff also set to lost their jobs.
Defence Secretary Liam Fox places some blame on the MoD, accusing them of helping “create the problem”, and reinforced the necessity of the cuts to balance military books and regain lost credibility.
Only personnel not due to be deployed were considered for redundancy, including some sailors who too part in the Libya campaign.
