Artist paints a brighter picture thanks to Arrow

Karin Walland is an artist based in Redcar and Cleveland. In her own words, Karin says “I was stuck and not really going anywhere. I needed contact with galleries both in this country and abroad and ideas of the best way to market my work.”

As with a lot of artists, the art was the easy part. It was getting her work out there that was difficult. With Karin it wasn’t just a hobby, it was a passion and a way of life. However she wanted to get her work out so that not only could she be a respected artist but an artist that made a living out of her passion.

Karin had previously applied for exhibitions as well as many galleries and had produced plenty of proposals for commissions. She was getting great feedback and verbal recommendations to contact various organisations but was not going any further.

She was sending photographs of her work to various galleries but was getting little response.

Karin started to work with Michael McMeekin of Arrow Sales. Karin and Michael McMeekin worked out how to write a “story” around her work and how to present it in a way that would look both professional and engaging.

The programme installed confidence in Karin and enabled her to approach people, galleries and organisations. She now has the tools and ideas of how to do this effectively and professionally.

At the end of the programme Karin Walland is now starting to be taken seriously. Because she has got the confidence to approach people, she is getting more contacts,

The result is she will be exhibiting at the new Heritage Gallery in Middlesbrough; there are discussions as to a solo exhibition at the Python Gallery and contacts to the Globe Gallery in Newcastle.

Together with Michael McMeekin she has now got her pendants into the shops at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and MIMA and has got contacts with Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Working with Michael McMeekin has given her the confidence to approach these galleries. With the help of the programme she has found important galleries in The USA such as Chicago Institute of Modern and a gallery in Kansas City, who are interested in viewing the work as well as targeting London galleries.

Karin is also collaborating with a wood sculptor on a public commission that will hopefully be the first of many.

Karin Walland had this to say “In spite of having a lot of health problems in 2011 this year has been a most positive one for my work and development. This is due to the programme and the unstinting support of Michael.”
