Time called on former Whitley Bay seafront bar
Work has started to demolish the former Avenue Public House in Whitley Bay.
The disused building, reportedly an eyesore on the town’s seafront, was bought by North Tyneside Council in 2014, as part of the authority’s regeneration plans for Whitley Bay.
Demolition work is expected to take around six weeks, and any localised disruption will be kept to a minimum.
Once complete, the site will be promoted for redevelopment, which could include high-quality housing.
In December 2014, North Tyneside Council revealed its Masterplan for the coastline between St Mary’s Island and Cullercoats Bay.
The proposals contain a mix of council and private sector developments and represent more than £30 million of new investment at the coast, aimed at making the area even more attractive to visitors, residents and businesses.
Elected Mayor for North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn said: “The removal of this unsightly building is another positive step in the successful regeneration of Whitley Bay as part of our £30 million Masterplan, and this uniquely-located site will offer a fantastic development opportunity.”
