Bothal Middle’s Whizz Kids

The latest eco-friendly super car has inspired budding designers on a mission to create the lunar mobile of the future

Joining forces with Stratstone BMW Tyneside, nine and 10-year-olds at Bothal Middle School in Ashington were set the challenge of dreaming up designs for the first intergalactic BMW.

The teams got hands on learning about the car manufacturer’s X Series and getting behind the wheel of its latest hybrid vehicle, the BMW i8.

On June 4 the finalists took to the stage to pitch their futuristic creations to judges in front of their peers, families and BMW staff before the overall winners were announced.

Andy Roberts, principal at Bothal Middle School, said: “It was a fantastic evening with all teams presenting extremely creative designs.

“Linked to the curriculum, the project aimed to enthuse Year 5 pupils in the areas of engineering and space technology while challenging their creativity and mathematics.

“The winning team impressed the judges with their understanding of space technology and in having costed the different components of their futuristic car.”

Those taking home the trophy, and prize of a remote controlled BMW i8 each, were Hope Newsome, Josh Home, Ashleigh Hunter, Thomas Luke and Shay Noble.

David Guy, head of business at Stratstone BMW Tyneside, said: “This is the fourth year of our partnership with Bothal Middle School and the standard of entries was once again outstanding. It’s a real pleasure to be involved in this project and I consider the youngsters involved to be a great credit to their community. I’m already looking forward to next year’s competition when I’m sure we’ll see some more exceptional designs.”
