Martin-Brooks aces six week school roof rush

School maybe out for pupils and teachers, but for the specialist roofers at Sheffield-based Martin-Brooks, the six-week holidays are no time for relaxing.

The firm is currently undertaking repairs and in some cases, complete reroofs, at 14 schools and one further education college across South Yorkshire and beyond.

With four projects in each location, Sheffield and Rotherham represent the majority of Martin-Brooks’ work, however, its teams have also been commissioned by schools in Barnsley, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Nottingham and as far afield as Staffordshire.

Ten of the 15 repair schemes are for primary schools and range from the six-week installation of concrete tiling and metal sheeting at Sunnyside Spencer Academy in Beeston, Nottingham, to flat roof repairs, lead work and new roof lights.

The largest project Martin-Brooks is undertaking this summer is at the Rodbaston campus of South Staffordshire College. Working with main contractor, GF Tomlinson, the firm will spend 10 weeks reroofing older buildings on the site with plain tiles, as well as fitting new single ply, Velux windows and rainwater goods.

Alex Elmore, Martin-Brooks’ contracts supervisor, said: “Each year, the number of schools we renovate during the summer holidays increases, as does our geographic spread. Carrying out work at height around children can be problematic for us and the facilities’ managers, so it makes sense to take advantage of the extended break and best of the weather. Fortunately, we have the capacity to meet this spike in demand, although our teams still deserve an A for effort!”
