Hermes plots £60m refurbishment at Centre:MK
Hermes Investment Management has announced it is to embark on a £60m investment drive at Centre:MK with co-owners AustralianSuper, as it looks to rejuvenate the regional shopping centre.
The Grade II listed building, which opened in Milton Keynes in 1979, has already undergone a £10m Rawls-designed refurbishment of Sunset Walk, with the next phase of investment set to begin.
This will include the development of new customer service facilities on Deer Walk encompassing a customer service lounge, family facilities and WCs, and the construction of a new 1,400 space multi-storey car park next to John Lewis, which is set to begin in the Spring.
London-headquartered Hermes has also announced plans for a digital investment programme to complement the refurbishment work, entailing the development of a new app for the centre, along with a new website and social media presence.
Ed Sellick, on behalf of centre:mk’s joint owners, Hermes Investment Management and AustralianSuper, commented: “Our £60 million programme of investment is designed to enhance the experience for visitors, leading to increased sales for our retailers and restaurants.
“As the town of Milton Keynes enters its 50th year, at centre:mk, ‘Re-Imagining an Icon’ is seeking to re-equip the UK’s first listed shopping mall for the 21st century. It is about reflecting and paying homage to the building’s iconic status, whilst at the same time reappraising what happens inside and, finally, the role centre:mk plays in Milton Keynes.”
