Helping ‘build’ careers for Dorset’s next generation

Young people in Dorset have had the chance to receive some all-important careers advice from a leading housebuilder.

Barratt Homes, which is bringing new homes to the county, attended a Careers Day at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne and were on hand to talk to the next generation of construction workers.

Designed to help young people make decisions about their future, the Dorset school’s Careers Day was an opportunity for its Year 9 students to hear from local employers in addition to visiting a university in the area.

Organised in a carousel format, employers delivered 15-minute talks for the youngsters and were available to offer advice where needed. James Cleary, Barratt Homes Project Manager, and Olivia Murphy, Barratt Homes Design Manager, were there speaking on the day, and they didn’t disappoint.

Queen Elizabeth School’s Careers Advice and Guidance Manager, Hayley Jones, said: “Both James and Olivia from Barratt were really engaging and had an informative presentation prepared. They spoke through the different types of careers and pathways that could be considered when entering the construction industry and were happy to answer questions from our students.

“To have representatives from such a large and well-respected employer here, who can share their experiences and knowledge, it’s so important.”

Anthony Dimmick, Barratt Homes Community Liaison Manager, is thrilled the housebuilder has had the opportunity to offer advice to young people in the local area.

He said: “It’s extremely important that we work in tandem with the communities where we are building new homes, and by working closely with schools and Careers Days such as this, we can inspire the next generation of construction workers.

“I’m glad to hear that James and Olivia’s talk was well-received.”

Queen Elizabeth School is a secondary school located in Wimborne Minster.
