Newcastle launches city-wide pride survey
Newcastle residents are being invited to have their say on what makes the city so special, as one of the largest engagement exercises ever held in ‘The Toon’ gets underway.
Newcastle’s Big Conversation launches today (January 26), encouraging people who live, work in or visit the city to share what makes them proud of Newcastle, what they would like to see change and how they believe the city should present itself on the world stage.
Commissioned by Newcastle City Council, the two-month initiative is expected to help shape the city’s future priorities, with the findings feeding into decision-making ahead of the local elections in May.
Thousands of people are expected to take part through a mix of on-street surveys, focus groups, online questionnaires and a programme of in-person events taking place across the city.
Council chief executive Pam Smith says the exercise has cross-party backing, with councillors united in wanting to give residents a stronger voice in shaping Newcastle’s future.
She said: “In 2025 the city was firmly put on the map with hugely successful events including the Mercury Prize and MOBOs bringing millions to the city economy.
“I was so proud to be connected to the city on those nights and it’s shown the world just a glimpse of what we have to offer.
“Like thousands of others, I fell in love with Newcastle the minute I stepped foot here.
“There is something special about the city that separates it from anywhere else.
“Beautiful architecture, a strong cultural heartbeat, a great football team and a reputation as a city where every stranger is a friend.
“How can you not be proud to be a Geordie?
“That will mean different things to different people, being a Geordie.
“We all have our own emotional connection to this city.
“All our experiences are different.
“The Big Conversation isn’t about the council consulting on a ready-made strategy.
“We are stepping back and want to see Newcastle have a conversation with itself.
“We want to give you the platform to tell us what you’re proud of, what you want to change, how you think we can go bigger and better than 2025.
“We’ll be out in force to get people involved and will be making it accessible to all so please do get involved.
“Speak up, shape Newcastle.”
Newcastle’s Big Conversation runs until March 20.
