Education conferences come to Tyneside
Gateshead and Newcastle Councils have joined forces to host a series of conferences which aim to improve the effectiveness of children’s learning.
Internationally renowned speakers from as far afield as Canada will address audiences of education professionals from across the country.
The events are sponsored by the Government Office for the North East (GONE) and Northumbria University and will take place in March, June and July.
The series of three separate events entitled Be Happy: Bounce Back - Building Resilience For Long Term Happiness have been borne out of a small-scale local study in schools, which has found teachers and school leaders trying out simple strategies to encourage resilience in their pupils.
Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, Councillor Catherine Donovan said: “You cannot underestimate the impact of a child’s well-being on their learning and long-term future and we are delighted such high-profile and talented professionals are coming to Tyneside to help us deliver this important message.”
Councillor Nick Cott, Executive Member for Children and Young People for Newcastle City Council, said: “The hardest part of improving standards in our schools can be getting our children to really believe that they can achieve.
“Teachers involved in the studies of these techniques which have already taken place have reported an immediate positive impact on how children see themselves both as people and learners, and it’s also a real honour for Newcastle and Gateshead to be hosting both national delegates and international speakers.”
The conferences will take place between 10am and 4pm on March 2, June 1, and July 6. For more information, contact either Helen.walker@newcastle.gov.uk, or janeanderson@gateshead.gov.uk.
