Sex education pack wins enterprise award final
A sex education resource to ease the difficult conversations between parents and children was the winning business idea at this year’s Young Enterprise North East Regional Final.
The awards ceremony, which was held at the Gosforth Marriott hotel, saw students from Prior Pursglove College in Guisbrough win the Company of the Year award.
Judged by members of the regional business community, the winning students will now go forward to represent the region at the National Final in London in July, where they will compete against schools from across the UK.
The student company named ‘Whose Life Is It Anyway?’ has developed ‘Sex Box’ - a sex education guide for parents to help them discuss sexual matters more effectively with their children.
The group designed the booklet as they felt that the advice they receive at school was out of date, uninformative and biased towards encouraging them not to have sex. It addresses the sexual issues that matter most to them and educates parents on the best way to broach the subject with their children.
All finalists presented their business ideas live on stage in front of members of the business community. Sage UK’s Graeme Edwards presented the winning group with the esteemed prize.
YENE’s chief executive Catherine Marchant said: “I was blown away by some amazingly inspiring and entrepreneurial young people at this year’s Regional Final.
“We can celebrate that our future economy is in safe hands if these are the workforce and business leaders of tomorrow. It proves that given the chance, young people can achieve great things.”
