New roles for North East leading lights
The chairman of one of the North East’s biggest technology companies and a veteran of a series of military peace keeping missions are just two of five people who have been appointed Deputy Lieutenants of Tyne and Wear.
Chair of the Northern Rock Foundation Alastair Balls, Bosnia and Iraq veteran Lieutenant General Robin Brims, Paul Callaghan of North East based Leighton Group, former commander of 150 Transport Regiment Colonel Varn Jassal and Newcastle University’s energy and engineering expert Professor Paul Younger have all been appointed Deputy Lieutenants.
All five were officially commissioned today as new Deputy Lieutenants of Tyne and Wear by The Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Mr Nigel Sherlock, OBE, KSt.J, JP.
Mr Sherlock said: “All have given exceptional service to the community, and through their current commitments continue to do so. The role of a Deputy Lieutenant is to give their full support to the Lord-Lieutenant and keep in touch with events within our community. They are charged with promoting a good atmosphere and a spirit of co-operation within our county. This takes the form of giving encouragement generally to the voluntary services, charitable organisations, business, industry and Her Majesty’s reserve forces, so strengthening the bond between Her Majesty The Queen and Her people.”
Deputy Lieutenants stand in for the Lord-Lieutenant when he is unable to accept an engagement, such as being present at Citizenship Ceremonies, Swearing In of new Magistrates or at presentations.
