International entrepreneur shares knowledge
On his first visit to the North East, an internationally renowned entrepreneur has shared his knowledge on innovation with Newcastle University Business School students and key business leaders in the region.
In what is the first of four visits to the university over the next two years, Professor Scott Shane of Entrepreneurial Studies at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, is a visiting scholar and best-selling author come commentator for the New York Times’ small business website.
During the visit, Professor Shane played a key roll in the launch event of the ‘FutureStory Newcastle and the North East’ publication which celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and industrial skills that characterise the area.
Speaking from the event at the Discovery Museum, the professor said: “This is important because it is indicative of Newcastle and the North East’s commitment to focusing its attention on building high potential, high growth companies, rather than just efforts to have a high number of entrepreneurs.”
A keynote speech was also delivered by Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for the Department, for Business, Skills and Innovation on the need to ensure the region’s success in an increasingly competitive global economy.
Director of Newcastle University Business School, Professor Ian Clarke, said: “A key part of our role is to understand the opportunities and risks in business creation.
“A visiting scholar, will, during his two year tenure with Newcastle University Business School reinforce and extend our mission to be at the forefront of understanding business policy and practice.”
