New software boss appointed
The University of Sunderland, in conjunction with Sunderland Software City (SSC), has appointed a Professor of Software Innovation, to help drive forward the growth of the software industry in the North East.
Professor Charles Sellers has taken up the newly created role within the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Sunderland, where he will play a leading role in delivering the University’s enterprise agenda, and in particular, encouraging more software businesses to start up and develop in the city and the wider North East region.
His role will help strengthen the links between academia and business, ensuring that students at the University are equipped with the skills that will help them become successful entrepreneurs, either setting up their own businesses or working in the software industry in the region. He will also help drive forward the University’s Software Hatchery, which was set up in mid 2009 to support students in developing their own software ventures.
Professor Sellers will work with schools in the region to make them aware of the University’s role in developing enterprises and supporting the software sector. Additionally, he will be involved in promoting the new MSc in Software Enterprise, a 12-month postgraduate course developed by the University and Sunderland Software City.
Bernie Callaghan, CEO of SSC, worked closely with the University throughout the appointment process. He said: “This appointment is central to driving forward the enterprise agenda for the software industry in the North East, and improving the process of matching businesses to high quality employees and leading edge research.”
