Petrol and diesel hit highest ever prices
Business commuters from across the region have been hit by another hammer blow as petrol and diesel prices reached their highest-ever levels.
On Friday Diesel climbed to an average of 133.26p a litre and unleaded soared to 128.62p.
Prices have leapt by nearly ten per cent in the past two months.
Motorists spend £12million a day more on fuel than a year ago and it costs nearly £75 to fill a typical 55-litre tank.
AA president Edmund King said: “Hitting a new record for diesel is yet another milestone along a road of misery for drivers.”
Experts warned last week that prices could go even higher after oil hit $99 a barrel on fears the tension in Egypt will spill across the rest of north Africa.
The high price means BP and Shell will post combined quarterly profits of £6billion next week.
Brian Madderson, head of RMI Petrol Retailers Association, said: “Motorists are really struggling and I fear we still have some way to go.”
