Cumbrian Seafoods on Top Producers list
An independent seafood supplier in the region has been named as one of the top 100 food and drinks manufacturers in the UK and Ireland.
County Durham based Cumbrian Seafoods appears on the list at number 93, alongside big names such as Unilever, Cadbury and Heinz, but is one of only a handful of independent companies to feature in it.
Last year the company consolidated a number of big contracts, including one with Asda to become its main supplier of chilled cod and haddock, as well as the first UK Company to display the Icelandic eco-label. These initiatives contributed to the company’s turnover of £155.5m last year.
Howard Sims, managing director of Cumbrian Seafoods said: “Cumbrian Seafoods has been a successful business for many years, but after an investment program totalling £20million building new facilities at Seaham and upgrading our West Lakes Smokery at Whitehaven.
“We have grown substantially with all of our major customers and intend to continue this trend capitalising on new opportunities.”
The report also highlighted changes in the industry but said that after a quiet period for mergers and acquisitions figures show indications of recovery since the start of 2011.
