Best drinks promotion ever?
Well, no.
In a move which made our editor thankful that he rarely goes for a night out in Newcastle, a city centre club has been rapped by the authorities for promoting excessive drinking.
It’s a fun game to imagine the meeting which led to the ‘Trashed’ event, planned as a weekly occurrence at the Attic bar.
“I’ve got a great idea. We get a breathalyser, test people at the end of the night, and the person with the highest result gets free entry the next week. If they’re below the legal limit for driving, we give them their money back.”
“That’s brilliant. It can’t fail.”
Unsurprisingly, the scheme was criticised by Northumbria Police, local alcohol campaign agency Balance, and Newcastle City Council, and has now been pulled from the Attic’s schedule.
Balance director Colin Shevills said: “This is one of the most outrageous and irresponsible drinks promotion offers I have ever witnessed.
“The thing that is new to me is that it seems to be rewarding people who get the most drunk.”
Mind you, it’s entirely possible that the Attic will now see even more business as a result of this free publicity than it would as a result of the Trashed promotion. Cynical? Us?
